Hair loss treatment for woman
Hair loss in woman named female hair loss, female alopecia hair loss is also called female-pattern baldness.
One in five women suffer from female hair loss. Androgenic alopecia in
woman is hereditary condition which causes hair loss or baldness in
about 20 percent of all women.
The survey showed that hair loss affects 23 percent of men and 21
percent of women. If you are healthy and you begin losing hair, then
your female hair loss condition may be hereditary. As with any medical
condition, check with your doctor for possible reasons for your hair
loss.
The typical pattern of hair loss in woman differs from men. In
women, the hair thins out all over the scalp, but the frontal hairline
is maintained. There may be moderate female hair loss on the crown of
the head, rarely progressing to total baldness as it may in men.
Female-pattern baldness typically begins during menopause when
woman's estrogen levels decrease and testosterone increases, causing
hair loss. Various forms of estrogen can "oppose" androgens and thereby
reduce their availability to the cell, by blocking androgen receptors.
Some women may also experience permanent hair loss during pregnancy or
when starting or stopping oral contraceptives. If balding occurs due to
birth control pills, then a woman should consult with her doctor about
switching to another pill.
Woman may also notice that they are losing hair at the end of a
pregnancy or after childbirth due to hormonal changes. In most cases,
hair re-growth will return to previous conditions between one to six
months. Read the section on Hair Loss Care for protecting your present
hair. Cosmetic alternatives, such as hair replacements or wigs, can
help conceal female hair loss with great success!
If you are losing hair, you first need to make sure your thyroid is
normal. Thinning hair is just one of the many symptoms that may suggest
a low or hypo-thyroid condition -- prevalent in women going through
mid-life hormonal changes. It may be necessary for you to see an
endocrinologist for hormone imbalances, namely androgens. Your birth
control pills might be too strong for you. Your gynecologist can
monitor your estrogen and progesterone levels which fluctuate during
pregnancy and menopause.
For women with Androgenetic alopecia, doctors may prescribe a hormonal
contraceptive tablet, Diane 35, containing Cyproterone Acetate and
Ethinyloestradiol. It is used for severe acne treatment in woman. This
drug may prevent further hair loss. Diane 35 must be continued
indefinitely if it shows signs of preventing further hair loss.
Possible side effects include: breast tenderness, headaches and
decreased libido. Men should be aware of the possible side effect of
breast enlargement, gynecomastia.
Another drug available is Tagamet, which contain Cimetidine
acetate. It is used for treating excess facial hair in woman, heart
burn, peptic ulcers, and over secretion of acid in the stomach.
Cyproterone acetate is used to reduce excessive sex drive in men and
sexual aggression. Cimetidine's main side effect involves interfering
with liver function, increasing the metabolism, or break down, of other
drugs taken with Cimetidine.
Spironolactone is commonly used to treat high blood pressure and may be
used for hair loss by decreasing the production of testosterone from
the adrenal glands.
